Welcome to April’s Challenge: One Step Closer
You’re not alone in this, and this month, we’re walking together. Let’s kick off April’s challenge and explain how small steps can lead to better blood sugars and better days. Today, We’re Covering: Why walking helps increase insulin...
The episode, word for word
I'm Neil Greathouse, and this is Your Best T1D Year, the podcast where we take one small habit each month and make life with type 1 diabetes a little less like a full time job.
T1D is relentless, but managing it doesn't have to be. Let's make this easier, together. And don't worry, this is only 5 minutes because frankly... that's about how long I can handle the sound of my own voice.
Alright, welcome to April and our new challenge: We're calling it One Step Closer, because that's exactly what we're doing this month. Taking small, consistent steps that move us closer to better blood sugar days.
And we're doing it through the wildly underrated habit of... walking.
Yep, walking. Not running. Not cross-training. Not a spin class with a DJ and a fog machine. Just plain ol' walking.
But here's the thing:
Walking helps your muscles use glucose, even without insulin.
It makes your body more sensitive to insulin over time.
And even a short walk after a meal can stop a spike in its tracks.
One study showed that just 3,400 extra steps in a day could have the same effect on blood sugar as 1 unit of insulin. So... this is real. It works.
Here's how the challenge works:
You pick your step goal: 5,000, 7,000, or 10,000 steps per day. We've got a free tracker you can use to check off how many days in a row you hit it.
Go grab it now at [ ](https://yourbestt1dyear.com) or click the link in my bio on Instagram or TikTok.
We're not trying to be perfect, we're just building momentum.
And to keep it fun? I'll be sending a few surprise packages to people who track their steps this month and sending you a free copy of my book, and some awesome T1D gear from brands I love. Totally free. Just my way of saying: "You showed up, and that matters."
This month isn't just about movement, it's about progress.
And if you're thinking, "This feels like something The Goonies would've done after finding the treasure map..." Well yeah, because it kind of is.
"Down here, it's our time.", Mikey, The Goonies
And this? It's our time to take one more step toward a version of T1D that doesn't feel all-consuming.
Episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, short, helpful, and walk-friendly.
Get the free tracker at [ ](https://yourbestt1dyear.com) or from the link in my bio on Instagram or TikTok.
You're not alone in this, and you don't have to figure it out all at once. Just one step. One day. Together.
Alright, I'll see you in the next episode. Let's go take one step closer.
