The American Diabetes Association notes that high-intensity exercise can spike blood sugar by 50 to 100 mg/dL due to cortisol and adrenaline.
Your body doesn't know you're jogging for fun, it thinks you're being chased.
So it dumps glucose into the bloodstream to fuel the escape.
And with T1D, we're left chasing those spikes with insulin.

The RPMs shoot up, the sound gets louder, but the car isn't going anywhere.
That's your body before a workout: stress hormones flood in, but instead of helping, they leave fuel sitting in the tank, aka your bloodstream, without a way to burn it efficiently.
Practical Reset Strategy
Here's your five-minute reset strategy when exercise feels like it's working against you:
Warm-up wisely, Ease into movement. A slow start helps your body shift from panic mode to steady burn.
Pause before panic-bolusing, Wait 15, 20 minutes after you finish moving. Let your body stabilize before you correct that post-exercise spike.
Pick your timing, Late-day workouts may mesh better with cortisol rhythms than early morning sprints.
Experiment small, Change just one variable, intensity, timing, or pre-fuel, and watch what happens. That's how we learn what your body needs.
And the long game?
Consistent movement lowers baseline cortisol and improves insulin sensitivity over time.
