You know that moment where you've slathered on sunscreen, jumped in the pool, and your CGM immediately decides it's on summer break too?

Yeah. Me too.

Or maybe you're halfway through a hike, drenched in sweat, and your pump adhesive just... slides off like a sticker on a wet cooler.

We're breaking down how sunscreen, sweat, and water mess with your T1D tech, and what you can actually do about it.

Here's the thing about sunscreen: it's oil-based.

And CGM adhesives? They're not exactly made to bond with SPF 50.

When you apply sunscreen over or under your sensor or pod, it messes with the adhesive layer, and that can lead to peeling, lifting, or flat-out rejection.

According to adhesive manufacturers like 3M and reports in The Journal of Diabetes Science & Technology, oils, lotions, and moisture-blocking creams are one of the top causes of premature device failure.

Translation: sunscreen turns your sensor site into a slip-n-slide.

Now add sweat to the mix.

When you're active, running, hiking, or just dealing with summer heat, your body produces more moisture under the adhesive.

That can cause:

Skin irritation

Sensor edges peeling

Adhesive breakdown that leads to sensor dropout

The sweat breaks the seal. Then water gets in. Then the tech stops talking.

And suddenly, your "3-day beach trip" sensor lasts about 6 hours.

Real-world tips that won't ruin your summer:

Apply sunscreen after sensors are placed, and avoid the site area

Use barrier wipes (like Skin Tac or Flonase spray) before insertion to help the adhesive stick

Let it dry fully, don't apply to sweaty or damp skin

Cover your sensor with a waterproof patch before swimming or sweating hard

Pat, don't rub, friction is a sensor's worst enemy

Avoid full water submersion if the sensor isn't certified waterproof (some still aren't!)

Bonus tip: Think of your CGM or pump like a temporary tattoo. Protect it like it's art you want to last.
