The Most Ignored T1D Hack (That Works While You Sleep)
No bolusing. No carb counting. Just better blood sugars, while you’re asleep. Here’s why sleep is the most overlooked T1D tool we have. Today, We’re Covering: How sleep boosts insulin sensitivity What poor sleep does to blood sugars Why...
The episode, word for word
I'm Neil Greathouse, I've been living with type 1 diabetes since 1992, and this is Your Best T1D Year. This podcast? For the first time ever - we are on video and audio! Can you believe it? These episodes are on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever you like to listen - but now, each episode is on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. It's short, and intentionally so. Each episode is under 5 minutes, which is just enough time for you not to get sick of me. Every month, we take on one small habit to help make life with type 1 diabetes feel a little less overwhelming. And this month? We're finally giving sleep the credit it deserves.
Let's start with this: Sleep requires zero bolusing, zero carb counting, and it can actually improve our blood sugars while we're unconscious. Sounds like a win, right? One study found that just one night of 4 hours of sleep can reduce insulin sensitivity by more than 20%. That's like giving our usual dose of insulin... and it shows up wearing pajama pants and a bad attitude. But when we do sleep well, insulin works better, our blood sugars are more stable, and post-meal spikes don't hit as hard. And the best part? We don't have to measure it, count it, or pre-bolus for it. We just have to build it into our routine.
I used to think sleep didn't really matter. But I started seeing the pattern:
Short sleep? My morning BG is high.
I'm more likely to overcorrect, skip a bolus, or eat like a raccoon at 1am.
And don't even get me started on the mood swings.
When we're exhausted, everything feels harder. But let's be clear: We're not doing a bad job, we're doing a hard job. And sleep helps us carry it without falling apart.
So here's our challenge for May: Let's get 7+ hours of sleep. It doesn't have to be perfect. But the more we commit to better sleep, the easier the rest of this gets. I've even set a 10PM alarm on my phone every night. (Shoutout to Trey Watson for that idea, it works.) If you want to track your sleep with me, grab the free printable tracker at yourbestt1dyear.com or from the link in my bio on Instagram or TikTok. We're not chasing perfection, just progress. And this month, that starts with rest.
New episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I'm Neil Greathouse, and this is Your Best T1D Year. One small habit at a time. You're doing it. Look at you, you're in the hunt, showing up, taking one small step toward your best T1D year ever. I'm proud of you. And I'm honored to be in this with you.
