How Walking Helped Me Avoid a Blood Sugar Spiral

It wasn’t the insulin correction, it was the walk. Here’s how a short walk stopped my numbers from spiraling and gave me the reset I needed. Today, We’re Covering: When a walk works better than a rage bolus How to interrupt the spiral and...

The episode, word for word

I'm Neil Greathouse, T1D since '92, Risely Health coach, and the guy currently considering whether walking to the fridge 9 times a day counts as cardio. Welcome to Your Best T1D Year, where we stack one habit at a time to create real, sustainable progress with T1D.

You've made it to the end of the April challenge, and yes, this is still a 5-minute podcast. Long enough to encourage you... but not so long that you feel like you're trapped in a motivational voicemail from Chris Traeger.

Let's look back for a second, because no matter how many days you tracked or how far you walked...

You did something that matters.

If you've been walking consistently this month, here's what may have shifted:

Your insulin might've started working faster Your blood sugars may have been smoother after meals You might've needed slightly less insulin for the same foods You felt a little more in control Or... you just remembered what it feels like to take a deep breath

Even if you didn't walk every day, every step counts. It's not about streaks. It's about momentum.

You also may have learned something about yourself this month:

Maybe mornings are your best time to move

Maybe walking after dinner helps you sleep better

Maybe you're more motivated when someone else is tracking with you

Or maybe, when stress starts building, walking gives your brain a reset button

This isn't just about insulin sensitivity. It's about feeling like you again, even in the middle of managing T1D.

As Donna and Tom from Parks & Rec would say:

"Treat yo' self." And in our case, treat yo' insulin resistance.

If you didn't do it "perfectly," don't worry, none of us did.

But if you walked more this month than you did last month? That's growth. That's progress. That's worth celebrating.

Download the tracker or jump in anytime at [ ](https://yourbestt1dyear.com), or from the link in my Instagram or TikTok bio.

And yes, I'm still picking random folks who've been walking and tracking to send surprise T1D gifts and free copies of my book. No gimmicks, just encouragement.

Episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and we're heading into May with a new habit to build.

[ ](https://yourbestt1dyear.com) is your home base for free trackers, resources, and next month's challenge.

You're not behind, you're already further than you were. And the steps you took this month? They brought you one step closer to the kind of T1D life you want.

See you in May. Let's keep going.

This is the script as read on the mic, lightly tidied for reading. Education, not medical advice. Talk to your care team before you change anything about your insulin.
