The Science, Why Glucose Tabs Work Faster Than Other Snacks

Not all low treatments are created equal. Glucose tabs don’t just work faster, they actually fix the problem without causing new ones. Today, we’re covering: How different low treatments break down in the body (juice vs. candy vs. tabs)...

The episode, word for word

Hey, welcome back to Our Best T1D Year! I'm Neil Greathouse, and if you've got 5 minutes, you've got time for this podcast, whether you're driving to work, walking your dog, or attempting to resist the giant pile of half-price Valentine's Day candy staring at you from the kitchen counter.

I don't know who decided that February 15th should be the official "Buy a 10-lb bag of Reese's Hearts and pretend it's for later" day, but here we are.

And since we're all surrounded by sugar right now, it's the perfect time to talk about why glucose tablets work faster than all of it, and why our low-blood-sugar brain does not want to believe that.

Let's say we're low right now. We open the kitchen cabinet, and we have:

A juice box

A candy bar

A banana

A handful of cereal

Glucose tablets

What happens when we eat each of these?

Candy Bar: High fat content, so digestion is slower. By the time the sugar kicks in, we might already be over-treating. Banana: Fructose has to be broken down before our body can use it as glucose, so it's not instant. Cereal or Crackers: We have to eat more to get the carbs we need, and they don't hit our bloodstream quickly. Juice Box: Works faster, but the portion size can spike us past where we want to be. Glucose Tablets: Straight-up dextrose. Absorbed fastest. No middleman. No extra junk.

This isn't about getting everything perfect. It's about making one small habit easier.

If we've ever treated a low and felt awful for hours afterward, this small shift might change everything.

We're not doing a bad job, we're doing a difficult job. But we're also getting smarter about how we do it.
