Why Glucose Tablets Are Actually a Game-Changer
We get it, glucose tablets aren’t exciting. But they’re faster, easier, and better for treating lows than most of the snacks we grab. Today, we’re breaking down: Why glucose tabs work faster than juice or candy How over-treating lows adds...
The episode, word for word
Hey, welcome back to Our Best T1D Year! I'm Neil Greathouse, and if you've got 5 minutes, you've got time for this podcast, whether you're making coffee, scrolling Instagram, or still recovering from the sheer amount of queso you consumed during the Super Bowl.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, if you watched it, you've probably seen that one ad about 500 times already. You know the one, the one that made you laugh way too hard even though you'll pretend it wasn't that funny. And if you didn't? Don't worry, you'll still be seeing it in memes for the next six months.
But today, we're talking about something even more controversial than Super Bowl commercials...
Glucose tablets.
People hate them. But I'm about to convince us why they're actually the best way to treat a low, even if our taste buds say otherwise.
Let's start with the elephant in the room: Most people hate glucose tabs. They're chalky. They feel like medicine. They're not an exciting choice when our brain is screaming for a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup or a slice of key lime pie.
But here's what nobody tells us:
We don't have to like them for them to work.
They work FASTER than most low snacks.
They prevent the "I over-treated and now I'm riding a rollercoaster" nightmare.
Because here's the truth: We don't need a "fun" snack to fix a low. We need the fastest, most efficient fix. And that's glucose tablets.
Alright, let's break this down. Why are glucose tabs actually better?
They contain dextrose, aka glucose, aka exactly what our body needs. Most snacks have fructose or sucrose, which takes longer to break down before our body can actually use it.
They're perfectly measured.
4 grams of carbs per tablet.
No "oops, I ate 17 of them by accident" moment.
They don't spike us later.
A Reese's at 2 AM? We'll be at 250 by the time we wake up.
Glucose tabs get us back to normal faster, without a rebound.
The biggest reason to use glucose tabs? They actually fix the problem instead of creating new ones.
Look, I get it. Changing habits is hard.
Our brain has been trained to grab snacks during a low. Remember, we're not doing a bad job, we're doing a difficult job.
But small shifts like this? They add up.
This challenge isn't about forcing ourselves to love glucose tabs. It's about giving ourselves a faster, easier way to treat lows, so we can get back to living our lives instead of fighting a blood sugar rollercoaster.
