The episode, word for word

It happened this week at my house. The evening got legitimately cool. The sun started clocking out early like it's got somewhere better to be. And I felt the pull. You know the pull. The one that whispers, "the walk can wait until spring."

And college football is in full swing, which means Saturday I sat down for a noon kickoff and resurfaced at midnight wondering why my back hurt and my CGM looked like a ski slope. Look, a college football Saturday is a three-and-a-half-hour sit, minimum, times three games if you're not careful. Unless your team is losing, in which case I pace the living room like an expectant father in a 1950s hospital and accidentally hit my step goal out of pure anxiety. My most active Saturdays are, statistically, our worst defensive performances. I have the data.

I'm Neil Greathouse, this is Your Best T1D Year, and today we get ahead of the fall slump, because the slump doesn't announce itself. It just quietly deletes your habits, one cool evening at a time.

Here's how it actually goes, and I know because it's gone this way for me for three decades. Nobody DECIDES to stop moving in October. Okay? Nobody sits down and says "I choose the couch until April." You just skip Tuesday because it's drizzling. Then the time change hits and it's dark at 5:30. Then it's Thanksgiving, then the holidays, and you look up in January at a step count that's half your summer number and you act shocked. Shocked! Like this hasn't happened every single year since the Clinton administration.

And remember why it matters, quick science callback: the two-day bonus fades. That insulin-sensitivity gift from every walk, the one from September, it's not a savings account, it needs deposits. The fall slump isn't just less movement. It's your body quietly losing a bonus it had all summer, right when the comfort food season starts. Rude timing. Extremely rude.

The fix is one decision, made now, while you still have daylight. Pick your indoor plan BEFORE you need it. Not a vague intention, people. A named plan. Mine this year: laps of the house at every halftime, and the get-up at every commercial break. Which, during a college football broadcast, means I will basically never sit through a full quarter, because those games are 40 percent commercials anyway. The ad reads are finally going to work FOR me.

Your options, pick one tonight. The halftime-and-commercials rule for whatever you watch. Ten minutes of marching or Wednesday's no-walk moves while your show runs. And if you're bingeing something, here's your new rule: you move during the "are you still watching?" screen. People, Netflix is literally pausing to ask you to reflect on your life. Now you have an answer for it. Mall walking. Grocery laps. The airport terminal if you travel like I do. Stairs. A band on the doorknob. It does not matter which one. What matters is that it's DECIDED, in October, so December-you never has to make a good decision in the dark at 5:45pm. December-you has never once made a good decision at 5:45pm. Mine either. That guy's a mess.

Hey, if you're the T1D in your family, you've probably wondered... could this happen to someone else? My family had zero warning when I was diagnosed. That part, at least, doesn't have to happen to yours.

T1D Scout sponsors this podcast, and it's a cheek swab you do at home. No needles, no blood. It estimates genetic risk for type 1. Now, it's not a crystal ball... it can't tell you what's coming. It just tells you who's worth watching closely for early symptoms, and who might want regular blood testing. Very few of us get a heads up with type 1 diabetes. This is the closest thing to one.

Your challenge this week: name your indoor plan. Out loud or in your notes app, actually name it. Then run it once this week as a dress rehearsal, even if the weather's still fine. And hit reply and tell me what you picked, because I want to share the big list back, and somebody's weird indoor plan is going to be exactly the permission somebody else needed.

yourbestt1dyear.com. Tracker's free, newsletter's free, the fall slump is coming either way. About 2,000 of us are getting there first.

T1D is relentless. The seasons are too. But you have never once been this ready for one.

We are the ones, people. My name is Neil. Monday, a guest, and honestly the episode I've been most excited about all challenge. See you then.
