The episode, word for word
Hey, welcome back to Our Best T1D Year! I'm Neil Greathouse, and if you've got 5 minutes, you've got time for this podcast, whether you're making coffee, procrastinating on something important, or realizing that this tracking challenge has been less of a neat spreadsheet and more of a full-blown Lara Croft expedition.
We started just writing things down, and suddenly, we're dodging blood sugar traps, unlocking hidden patterns, and realizing there's way more going on beneath the surface than we thought.
Today, we're talking about the biggest surprises from this month, the things we didn't expect to learn, but now can't unsee.
Because sometimes, the most valuable clues aren't the ones we were looking for. And, just like in Tomb Raider, they're usually hiding in plain sight.
We went into this challenge thinking we were just tracking carbs, insulin, and numbers.
But what actually happened? We discovered:
Our blood sugar sometimes starts rising before we even eat. (Hello, feet-on-the-floor effect!) We've been undercounting snacks more than we thought. (That handful of pretzels? Yeah, not 10 carbs. More like 40.) Exercise doesn't always do what we expect. (Cardio vs. weight training? Totally different BG impact.) The more we track, the more predictable things start to feel. (It's like having a map instead of wandering blindfolded through a maze.)
Tracking revealed stuff we didn't even think to look for, just like Lara Croft realizing the real treasure wasn't just the artifacts, but the knowledge along the way.
Now that we've got all these new insights, what do we do with them?
Step 1: Keep the Clues Handy Even if we stop tracking daily, we can remember what we've learned. A quick mental check-in, "Do I need to pre-bolus earlier for this meal?", goes a long way.
Step 2: Track for Answers, Not for Perfection If something feels off, track for a few days and see what jumps out. Think of it like pulling out a map when you're lost, not something you carry around all the time.
Step 3: Don't Ignore the Small Wins Maybe our post-meal spikes are lower. Maybe we feel less surprised by random highs and lows. Maybe, just maybe... this is starting to feel a little easier.
The biggest win? We're paying attention.
Even though tracking is wrapping up, we're leaving with real knowledge about how our blood sugar works.
We're making adjustments based on facts, not just feelings. We're not as confused as we were in February. And we actually understand our numbers in a way that helps us, not stresses us out.
Kind of like Lara Croft realizing the ancient ruins weren't just a bunch of rocks, there was a strategy behind every clue.
Because we're not doing a bad job, we're doing a difficult job. And this challenge? We crushed it.
