There's a study out of France that followed 3,615 people for nine years. They measured their water intake at the start, then tracked who developed high blood sugar over time.
The people who drank more than a liter of water per day? 28% lower risk of developing hyperglycemia. The people who drank less than half a liter? 28% higher risk.
That's not a typo. That's a 56-point swing from water intake alone.
Today we're breaking down the study that proved hydration isn't optional, it's protective.

So let's talk about the DESIR study.
DESIR stands for Data from an Epidemiological Study on the Insulin Resistance Syndrome. Catchy name, right? Sounds like a pharmaceutical commercial where everyone's playing frisbee in slow motion.
But the study itself is rock solid. It started in 1994 and followed 3,615 middle-aged adults in France for nine years. None of them had diabetes at the start. Researchers measured their fasting glucose, their water intake, and their copeptin levels, that's the marker we talked about on Wednesday that tracks with vasopressin, the thirst hormone.
Then they waited. Nine years. They tracked who developed high blood sugar and who didn't.
Here's what they found.
People who drank more than one liter of water per day, that's about four cups, had a 28% lower risk of developing hyperglycemia over those nine years.
People who drank less than half a liter per day, about two cups, had a 28% higher risk.
Now, let's talk about copeptin, because this is where it gets really interesting.
People in the top quartile of copeptin, meaning the most dehydrated, had a 23.5% incidence of new-onset hyperglycemia. People in the lowest quartile, the most hydrated, had only 11%.
That's a 12.5-point spread. Just from hydration.
And here's the kicker: the researchers controlled for everything. Age. Weight. Physical activity. Baseline glucose. Family history. This wasn't about people eating more or exercising less. This was about water intake.
Low water intake independently predicted who would develop high blood sugar. And high copeptin, the dehydration marker, was a direct predictor of hyperglycemia.
The study concluded that drinking more water could be a simple, low-cost intervention to reduce the risk of developing high blood sugar. Not a cure. Not a miracle. Just a basic, unsexy habit that works.
Now, this study was done in people without diabetes. But the biology is the same for us. Dehydration raises vasopressin. Vasopressin raises glucose. Water lowers vasopressin. Lower vasopressin stabilizes glucose.
You can't rewrite your DNA. You can't reverse your autoimmune disease. You can't make your pancreas start working again. But you can drink one more liter of water per day. You can lower your copeptin. You can stop making your blood sugar work against you.
One liter is about four cups. Most of us aren't even drinking three. That's the gap. That's what we're closing in this challenge.
