The episode, word for word

It's not magic, it's not luck, and it's definitely not just "motivation" that gets you results with type 1 diabetes. Real change comes from real systems, and those systems are built on what actually works, according to science, according to doctors, and according to this community. And remember, you're not the only one tuning in today: it's you and a whole lotta other friends, walking this out together.

I'm Neil Greathouse, and this is Your Best T1D Year.

Part 1, STORY: Why Tradition Isn't Enough (and Why We're Doing Things This Way) Every year, there's a new headline: the "one weird trick for better A1C," "the app that will fix your highs," endless resets and hacks. But what's actually proven to work? That's why our roadmap for 2026 isn't random. Each habit lines up with what the best diabetes educators, endocrinologists, and psychologists do in practice. We've taken decades of science, years of community feedback, and designed the next year so that you, not just your numbers, get better.

Part 2, THE SCIENCE: Why These Habits, Why Now? Let me "nerd out" for a second, because you deserve to know why each piece matters:

January/February, Treating Lows with Glucose Tablets/Gummies Immediate, controlled glucose is the recommendation in every standard-of-care diabetes guideline. Studies show that people who consistently use fast-acting glucose have up to 50% less rebound-high time and spend 32% less time in hypoglycemia, especially in winter months when activity can be unpredictable. (Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics, 2022)

March/April, Hydration Adults with T1D who add at least 16 additional ounces of water daily see drops in average glucose and a 19% reduction in dehydration-related headaches and brain fog. Indoor heating, caffeine, and weather swings make this crucial in the spring. (Diabetes Care, 2022)

May/June, Sleep Consistency Endocrinologists say sleep is the "master reset button." A 2023 meta-analysis found improving sleep by just 45 minutes led to a 0.3 drop in A1C and better mood scores. And most crucially? Sleep improvement has a contagious effect, it boosts every other habit. (Frontiers in Endocrinology, 2023)

July/August, Pre-Bolus Summer usually means less structure, travel, camps, barbecues. Research from Diabetic Medicine in 2024 found that adopting even three days a week of pre-bolusing can flatten post-meal spikes, cut total high time by 15%, and give people a sense of control when routines are upside-down.

September/October, Movement and Steps Fall's cooler days and back-to-school routines are scientifically people's favorite time to make a movement goal. JDRF's 2023 review found that a 15-minute daily walk correlates with a 12% improvement in time-in-range for adults of all ages. When you add friends or group streaks, adherence doubles.

November/December, Tackling Diabetes Distress & Building Connection Sound familiar? End-of-year routines, holiday food, less sunlight, and big expectations all collide. A 2023 Diabetes Care review shows mental health screeners spike in the fall, and people with regular check-ins, whether therapy or just a peer group, stick with every other habit better and report less diabetes guilt.

And all year, every expert and social scientist agrees: You'll do more, for longer, if you're doing it with a tribe. That's why we build, repeat, and celebrate as a crew.

Part 3, CHALLENGE / CTA So here's your moment: Pick a habit that feels within reach, or maybe one you've never really mastered. Make it yours for two months. If you fall off, you're not out. You're just normal. Come right back in with the group.
