The Pre-Bolus Window
Ever feel like insulin and food are running on different clocks? This episode breaks down the “magic window” where timing your dose actually lines up with your meal, and how to find it. Today, We’re Covering: What the “pre-bolus window”...
The episode, word for word
There's a magic window where insulin and carbs actually show up to the party at the same time.
Miss it? You spike.
Hit it? Everything just... works.
The only problem is, it's not the same window every day.
Hey, I'm Neil, and this is Your Best T1D Year podcast. My brand new book called Type 1 Diabetes: True Stories is available now on Amazon!
I was diagnosed with type 1 during Air Force flight training, and even decades later, I still have days where I ask myself, "Did I pre-bolus... or just think I pre-bolused?"
Today, we're talking about the Pre-Bolus Window: that sweet spot where your insulin has just enough of a head start to keep up with your meal.
You've probably heard "15 minutes" as the standard pre-bolus timing. But that's more of a ballpark than a rule. The truth is, the best window depends on a few things:
Your blood sugar trend
What you're about to eat
How sensitive you are to insulin
What your day's been like (stress, sleep, movement, it all matters)
Some meals hit fast. Some take their time. And your timing can shift by the hour.
So if you've been trying to hit a "perfect" number every time, take a breath. You're not doing it wrong. You're just living in the real world.
Here's what this might look like in practice:
Flat blood sugar + fast carbs (like cereal or rice)? Maybe pre-bolus 15, 20 minutes.
Slow meal (like pizza or pasta + fat)? Maybe you delay part of the bolus or pre-bolus closer to the meal.
Dropping blood sugar or active insulin on board? You wait. Watch. Maybe you dose as you eat instead.
You don't need to get it right every time. You just need to start paying attention to the pattern.
If this feels overwhelming, here's your move: pick one meal. The most predictable one in your day.
Try a 5-minute pre-bolus. Just five.
See how it feels. See how your CGM reacts.
You're not memorizing a textbook, you're building a rhythm that works in your life.
And the only way to do that is by experimenting without fear.
You might not see massive change overnight. But what if you saw a little less of a spike after lunch? Or fewer rollercoasters in the afternoon?
That's how it starts.
New episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Here's something real, sometimes it's not just about a prescription. It's about having a plan and someone in your corner. Blue Circle Health offers both. CGMs, meds, support, and people who listen. They're helping folks rebuild confidence in their care, and it's all free. Learn more for free at [ ](http://bluecirclehealth.org) and they help sponsor this podcast.
I'll say it again, nobody remembers easy.
But you're out here trying. And I respect the heck out of that.
