The Real Reasons We Don’t Go to Bed On Time

We know sleep matters. So why do we stay up scrolling anyway? Let’s talk about the real stuff, and the small moves that fix it. Today, We’re Covering: The sneaky reasons we delay bedtime How to build a simple nighttime routine Why small...

The episode, word for word

I'm Neil Greathouse, I've been living with type 1 diabetes since 1992, and this is Your Best T1D Year. This podcast is under 5 minutes, just like the time it takes to say, "One more episode"... and somehow still end up watching 4 more. Each episode, we pick one habit to focus on, something that helps us work on diabetes, instead of feeling like we're stuck reacting to it.

This month's focus is sleep.

And today we're digging into the real-life stuff that's keeping us from getting better rest, and what we can actually do about it.

Okay let's be honest... we know sleep is important. But we also know the struggle:

You say goodnight... and then scroll until your thumb cramps.

You finish work... but then reward yourself with YouTube rabbit holes.

Or my personal favorite: You lie in bed, wide awake, wondering if you remembered to bolus for dinner... yesterday.

The point is: we want better sleep, but our routines are working against us.

Good news? You don't need a 14-step monk-level sleep protocol. Just start with 2 moves: Set a bedtime alarm. Yeah, like a reverse wake-up alarm. When it goes off? Start wrapping it up. Credit to Trey Watson, this was his idea he told me about last year. Pick one wind-down cue. It could be:

Turning off screens

Reading for 10 minutes

Brushing your teeth and putting on jammie pants can be part of your routine

Doesn't have to be fancy, just consistent. And the cool thing is... after a week or two, your brain starts to recognize the pattern.

Here's what this really is:

You're not just trying to "go to bed earlier."

You're building margin, so that tomorrow's version of you isn't running on fumes. That version of you makes better insulin decisions, avoids overcorrecting, and maybe doesn't forget their CGM at home.

We don't need 12 hours of sleep.

But we do need better patterns, and we're building them together.

I'm Neil Greathouse, and this is Your Best T1D Year. New episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And hey, you could've scrolled. But you pressed play on something that helps. That tells me something about you. You're not just surviving this thing... You're in the hunt. And I'm right there with you.

Week 16

This is the script as read on the mic, lightly tidied for reading. Education, not medical advice. Talk to your care team before you change anything about your insulin.
