The Best Time to Walk for Blood Sugars
Is it better to walk before or after a meal? Morning or evening? Let’s talk about when to walk to get the most out of this habit and avoid those big blood sugar spikes. Today, We’re Covering: Why post-meal walks can reduce glucose spikes...
The episode, word for word
I'm Neil Greathouse, T1D since 1992, coach at Risely Health, and the guy still figuring this out right alongside you. Welcome to Your Best T1D Year, the podcast where we take one small habit each month and make life with type 1 diabetes a little steady, even when T1D gets chaotic.
This isn't about perfection. It's about showing up today with one simple win that helps. And also... I'm legally required to keep this short before I start annoying myself.
Today we're tackling a big question: "Does when I walk actually matter?"
Short answer? Yeah... kind of. Long answer? We're gonna break it down.
If you walk after meals, your muscles grab glucose from your bloodstream, meaning smaller post-meal spikes. One study showed people who walked 15 minutes after breakfast had glucose levels 50% lower than when they stayed seated. That's not just helpful, that's Indiana Jones choosing the right goblet helpful.
"He chose... wisely."
Now, walking before meals can also help, especially if your blood sugar is creeping up and you've got insulin on board. It improves insulin sensitivity before the food hits your system.
And fasted walks in the morning? That can help tame the dawn phenomenon, when your blood sugar rises from cortisol before breakfast.
Each time of day has its perks. But here's the truth...
Walking consistently is more important than walking perfectly.
Don't overthink it. If mornings work for you, great. If you only have 10 minutes after dinner, use that. If you're pacing your kitchen between Zoom calls? Count it.
What matters most is that you move, regularly, and learn what your blood sugar does in response.
You'll start to see patterns, and that's where the magic happens.
So for today, try walking at a different time than usual. Go fasted. Go post-meal. See what changes.
