The episode, word for word
Alright, we need to talk.
Because ever since I announced this hydration challenge, I've been getting the same question over and over and over again.
"Does coffee count as water?"
"What about tea?"
"I drink Diet Coke all day, does that count?"
"Does sparkling water count, or does it have to be flat?"
Here's the thing: these are not stupid questions. These are good questions. Real questions. Questions that need answers.
So today, we're settling this once and for all. No more confusion. No more "close enough." We're getting into it.
Welcome to Week 2 of the Hydration Challenge: Refilling What T1D Drains. And if you're just joining us, you're not behind. Jump in right now. We're all just trying to drink more water than we did last week.
My name is Neil Greathouse, and this is Your Best T1D Year.
And one more thing before we get started: this episode is Seinfeld-themed. Two weeks ago, I did a Princess Bride episode and packed it with references. Today? I'm doing the same thing with Seinfeld. I've hidden quotes, catchphrases, and one-liners all through this episode. At the end, I'll explain the contest and how you can win a signed copy of one of my books.
Alright. Let's talk about coffee.
Alright, let's establish the rules. And I'm laying them out very specifically, because if you don't follow them, no hydration for you.
Here's the rule: Plain water is the baseline. Everything else is a bonus, not a substitute.
Let me break it down beverage by beverage.
Does coffee count as water?
No.
"But Neil, coffee is made with water."
Yeah, and a hot dog is made with meat, but I'm not calling it a steak.
Coffee has caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic. That means it makes you pee. And when you pee, you lose water. So at best, coffee is a wash. At worst, it's making you more dehydrated.
Now, I love coffee. I drink it every day. But it doesn't count toward your hydration goal. These pretzels are making me thirsty, and so is your Venti iced latte.
Water first. Coffee second.
Same rules as coffee. If it has caffeine, it doesn't count.
Herbal tea? That's a gray area. If it's caffeine-free, you're closer to water. But let's be real, you're not drinking herbal tea for hydration. You're drinking it because you're trying to feel fancy.
Plain water is still the gold standard. Tea is a bonus. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Oh boy. Here we go.
Does Diet Coke count as water?
Absolutely not.
"But it's zero calories! It's zero carbs!"
Great. It's also zero hydration points. Artificial sweeteners don't hydrate you. They just make your kidneys ask, "What's the deal with this guy?"
Look, I get it. Some of you drink Diet Coke all day like it's your job. You've got a can in your hand at 7am. I'm not judging. But don't call it hydration. Call it what it is: a carbonated lifestyle choice.
If you want bubbles, drink sparkling water.
Does sparkling water count?
Yes.
LaCroix, Topo Chico, Waterloo, all of it counts. It's just water with bubbles. The carbonation doesn't cancel out the hydration. You're good.
But if it has added sugar or artificial sweeteners, we're back to "no." Read the label. Gotta support the team.
They all have water in them. But they also have carbs, calories, and sugar. You're not using them as your primary hydration source.
They don't count. Water counts. That's what I'd like to know about it.
Listen, if you're slamming a Red Bull at 2pm just to survive your afternoon, I get it. But it's not hydration. It's survival. And that's fine. Just don't count it toward your water goal.
Also, energy drinks are kind of like the opposite of sponge-worthy. You really want to use your body's hydration reserves on that?
Here it is: If it has caffeine, sugar, or artificial sweeteners, it doesn't count as your baseline hydration.
Water is your baseline. Everything else is yada yada yada.
You can have your coffee. You can have your tea. You can have your Diet Coke. But you also need to drink plain water. That's the challenge. Serenity now.

Alright, here's your challenge: track your plain water intake today. Not your coffee. Not your Diet Coke. Just plain water.
Write it down. Snap a photo of your water bottle. Post it to your Instagram Story and tag @thebetes. Use the hashtag #RefillWhatT1DTakes.
Now here's the fun part, the contest.
Two weeks ago, I did a Princess Bride-themed episode and packed it with references. Today, I did the same thing with Seinfeld. I hid quotes, catchphrases, and one-liners all through this episode. Some are obvious. Some are really subtle.
Here's what you do: Listen again. Count how many Seinfeld references you caught. Then go to my Instagram and comment on the Episode 167 post with your count. Whoever gets the most, or gets closest, wins a signed copy of one of my books. Your choice.
Go to yourbestt1dyear.com to sign up for the challenge. Over 1,100 people are in. You're not behind. Jump in now.
Look, I know this feels nitpicky. You're thinking, "It's just coffee. Why does it matter?"
It matters because T1D is relentless. You're already managing more than most people will ever understand. And hydration is one of the few things you actually control.
You can't fix your beta cells. You can't reverse your autoimmune disease. But you can fill your water bottle. You can drink one more cup today than yesterday. You can give your body what it needs.
You don't need perfection. You just need progress. One cup at a time.
You shouldn't have to decode every drink label at Target. And by Week 3, you won't, you'll know exactly what hydrates you and what doesn't.
I'll see you Wednesday. Let's keep going.
Type 1 diabetes is relentless, but managing it doesn't have to be. New episodes drop every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
You're not doing a bad job, you're doing a difficult job. Nobody remembers easy.
